While rummaging through my vinyl I remembered a little known fact, that is, it’s little known to those who are not or have never been DJ’s. It’s not a big deal, but more of a “huh, I did not know that.” and then you continue about your day.

The hip-hop group Jurassic 5, more importantly DJ’s Numark & Cut Chemist of Jurassic 5 (J5), released a EP in or around 1997-98 entitled simply: J5

Now most people who like this group this is of little news, however if you just so happened to purchase this EP on vinyl when it was originally released, and later heard the song called:

Lesson 6: The Lecture

You might have noticed some significant differences in the track. Most noticeably the intro. For reasons not publicly known, Cut Chemist changed a great deal of the beat samples in the track. One that strikes me as the most apparent is the (Edited version @ 1:44)
“If you think that Frank Sinatra & Led Zeppelin go together…EDIT, no combinations of music.”

The reason this is the most noticeable to me, is that this part makes a complete stutter in the flow/rhythm of the song, allowing you to notice the beat change almost immediately following at 2:07 that sounds like a Tuba rather than Violins slowly pulsing.

Who gives a shit you ask? Who knows… But I for one think that the original vinyl release of this track was ten times cleaner and skillful than the edited version.

Don’t believe me? I took the liberty of transferring my vinyl of the song and converting it to mp3 for this post, as the original song is literally impossible to get on CD or MP3.
My theory is that they would of had to pay royalties to the artist in which Chemist sampled, and being that they were a new group, this was out of the question. I had heard they only released 1,000 copies of the original EP which the original is from, who knows if this is true, though it would make sense that when it reached the rerelease and CD release stage it was completely changed.

Here is the original version, compare and enjoy:

(Blips & Beeps & Beats)

Like other genre names, trip-hop, etc. It stems from falling out of any other specific genre title. In other words, commercial execs couldn’t think of a standard genre it could fall under, so they made up some retarded name for it. Where as Trip-Hop is supposedly hip-hop without words (how is that not hip-hop?), Blip-hop is blips and bleep sounds that move you… (…christ, I just threw up a bit in my throat.)

Blip-Hop is more unclassifiable beeps and noises, often overlaying abstract beats or sometimes even completely by themselves. Not to be confused with Electro, which is more in the form of rhythmic groups of electronic/synthetic sounds that stay steady and usually progress through out the song rather than scattered, fast cutting and sometimes jolting spontaneity. Throw a rock at the 80s and you’ll hit a song with electro in it — Jesus even I remember spinnin’ this or 9 other variations of it:

Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force - Planet Rock
(Who is claimed to have started it all)

Pay particular attention to the last portion of the song, that is typical electro. Blip is a bit different, other than the latter that I explained about its fast cutting nature, it usually has bits of ambience, atmosphere and variety, both with and with out beats. A good example of a blip-hop artist is Doctor Rockit.
I first heard of Dr. Rockit when I bought a DJ Food album in the mid 90’s, he remixed a song called Half-Step. At the time it sounded more like porn music, but in some strange way I dug it. I suspect I liked it because I was strongly familiar with the original Food tune, but on top of that, it exposed me to this strange form of music I had never heard and wanted to know more about, so I dug deeper.

Eventually I found a wide array of DJ’s and artists that dabbled in the blips and beeps, and some that were full fledge bleep-a-holics. The more and more I dug, the more I found artists I had listened for a long time having a part or even a full track on someone else’s album that was in the style of this experimental sound.
What is even more amazing, is the versatility of the artists who make this music, here is a perfect example from Dr. Rockit.

A classic blip track or what he is more familiar with as a DJ:

Doctor Rockit - Male James Bonding

Now listen to this track of his:

Doctor Rockit - Cafe De Flore

Notice any difference?

You’d be surprised at the different types songs these DJ’s can produce, I’m not even going to mention DJ Shadow or DJ Krush, which have always been my personal favorites. But if you’re familiar with the realm of the DJ (not Turntablists), then you should be very aware that the chosen form of what they spin or produce isn’t always the end of what they’re capable of making. And the more versatile and experimental you are, the better the music you’ll make, it all comes from their experience, whether or not they choose stick in a particular ‘genre’ is up to them.

Either way, a few artists you may want to check out if you like Blips & Beeps & Beats might be;

Autechre
Mouse On Mars
Plaid
Clatterbox
Metamatics
Doctor Rockit
Two Lone Swordsmen

Will shameless ego-centric blog photos of females begging men to look, help get them laid? Here’s a few examples.

Of course there is the obvious artists are like James Brown, not so much James himself, though he does inspire in his own way, but more so the Mo’town artist that were virtually unknown, those who made the music behind the singers.

A good example of this type of music is in Marvin Gaye’s T Plays it Cool — Which is not Marvin Gaye.

I’m also talking about artists like David Axelrod, who simply is a mystery to me, I never actually touched his music for sampling back in the day simply out of respect for the man.

Also, there are artists like Bob James, who is more well known than say Axelrod or MacDermot simply because he was pretty much ripped off by every 80’s hip-hop artist under the sun with his Take Me To Mardi Gras — but this isn’t that.

I can’t say I have a personal favorite of anything, but Galt MacDermot definitely made one of my favorite songs of all time. And yes, he was sampled by numerous artists as well, one being Busta Rhymes Woo Hah!! but nothing could compare to the original when it comes to anything — and this isn’t Space, though you’re close.

Carat Black is another, this tune inparticular I always liked, can’t think of one she made that didn’t have some sort of funky beat underneath her sexy preachin’ chocolate exterior.

— What is the strangest song you’ve ever heard by an artist you know very well? (In the sense that you know they’re extremely versatile and talented, but that one song is just out of fucking left-field, yet somehow keeps the style of the artist.)

Well?

Mine has got to be, Sharp A2 by Luke Vibert

If you know of his work, you know that he is extremely broad, his music stems from ambient to basement to unclassifiable noise. So what makes this song so out from left field?

Frankly, it’s because it’s the equivalent to a written reversal. You believe it’s going one way, then it fucking goes the other way, then it rips your heart out, then changes again, finally after you feel completely unsafe and disturbed possibly, it shits on you and leaves you not knowing if you like it or not.

Throughout the years with Vibert it’s usually black or white, and I guess that’s what makes this one still out of left field for me.

In 1998 Volkswagen released their new beetle with a commercial...

In 1998 Volkswagen released their new beetle with a commercial featuring a song by Stereolab entitled Parsec (from the dots and loops double lp). Anyhow, Tony didn’t believe me when I told him what this song was used in some time ago when he asked, “Where have I heard this before…” and being that he doesn’t have a strong sense of musical talents, and the fact he doesn’t believe a word that comes out of my fucking mouth…

Here it is bitch — quality isn’t the best, but hey at least I found it:

He was riding it down the street minding his own business, and this cop on horse-back had been following him for awhile.
The cop pulls him over, he asks him, “Did Santa give you that new bike for Christmas son?”
My brother said with a smile on his face, “Yeah, he did.”

So the cop proceeded to write a ticket and said to my brother, “Next time why don’t you ask Santa to put some reflectors on the bike.” and handed him a ticket.

My brother sat there for a moment, looked at the horse and at the police officer, and then said, “Did Santa give you that horse for Christmas?”
Humoring him the cop said, “He sure did.”

So my brother said,
“Why don’t you ask Santa next year to give you a horse with a dick on the bottom instead of on the top.”
”

Probably one the best live songs I’ve ever heard played by...

Probably one the best live songs I’ve ever heard played by Built to Spill.

Old friend of mine was into this band back in like 1996 or so, used to drag me to their shows, along with 764-HERO and pre-epic Modest Mouse.

I never got into them as I’m more into instrumentalist, but none the less
while digging through some of my sound files I stumbled onto it again and I thought I’d share it.

Everytime I hear it the transitions just blow me away - and it’s fucking live.

Solid Investment: Ion iTTUSB05 USB-Turntable

Bought one of these some time ago and have been meaning to post about it.

If you’re a vinyl junkie, like myself, a product like this is great for archiving or just plain backing up most of your vinyl on a digital medium.

Doesn’t cost much, runs anywhere between $50-100 depending where you buy it.
Has a USB cable and RCA cables incase you want to run it through a mixer (didn’t bother testing that), comes with a case and weighs about 10lbs.

It’s quite sturdy, a post I made awhile ago regarding the break beats was all transferred using this. It comes with a hard-case top and some quick capturing software called: Audacity

Audacity, isn’t the most complicated or sophisticated audio recording application, but it gets the job done. Of course if you have another app, or pro tools, etc you can just as easily use those [PnP].

Here’s a comparison:

Non-vinyl MP3 off CD -

Vinyl MP3 -

(And if you weren’t already taught at a young age by your parents for some reason.)

Don’t wear sandals and a beanie at the same time

Don’t talk loud on your cellphone (no one wants to hear your useless conversations)

Shower daily & use deodorant

Don’t leave 30 feet between you and the car in-front of you at a stop light

Don’t walk your dog and talk on your cellphone

Don’t chew food and talk at the same time about how much you like the Family Guy

Don’t write your awesome script in public and/or local coffee shop

Don’t listen to NPR radio

Don’t wear pants with a hole in the kneecaps, a wife-beater, and a sports jacket with sandals (JESUS-FUCKING-CHRIST)

Don’t use the 405 freeway

Don’t treat others like shit because you’ve convinced yourself you have stature

Don’t live in an apartment and have children

Don’t pretend your dog is automatically a friend with every other dog on the planet — and get him the fuck away from my dog

Don’t clap at the end of a movie — Why the fuck would you do this in the first place, who are you clapping at?

Don’t work at FOX

Don’t be male and wear skin-tight jeans

Don’t think any of these are remotely cool:

They’re not.

Don’t tell others not to smoke, or cough when someone does (this calls for an immediate ass-beating)

Don’t call an idea a high-concept

Don’t try to be something you’re not, just be yourself

Since Youtube has started disabling sound on any video that uses soundtracks from literally any record label that has a hard on about other people playing them, I decided to upload a flash version with the original sound intact.

Just a side note, I find it completely ironic that Youtube is now acting like the Gestapo with matters like these, especially when their popularity came from their past leniency towards all copyrighted material.
