Exposé of Self-Exploitation
this is not a blog, keep diggin'.
And now for a little informational tid-bit...

Ello’Ello,

While rummaging through my vinyl I remembered a little known fact, that is, it’s little known to those who are not or have never been DJ’s. It’s not a big deal, but more of a “huh, I did not know that.” and then you continue about your day.

The hip-hop group Jurassic 5, more importantly DJ’s Numark & Cut Chemist of Jurassic 5 (J5), released a EP in or around 1997-98 entitled simply: J5

Now most people who like this group this is of little news, however if you just so happened to purchase this EP on vinyl when it was originally released, and later heard the song called:

Lesson 6: The Lecture

You might have noticed some significant differences in the track. Most noticeably the intro. For reasons not publicly known, Cut Chemist changed a great deal of the beat samples in the track. One that strikes me as the most apparent is the (Edited version @ 1:44)
If you think that Frank Sinatra & Led Zeppelin go together…EDIT, no combinations of music.

The reason this is the most noticeable to me, is that this part makes a complete stutter in the flow/rhythm of the song, allowing you to notice the beat change almost immediately following at 2:07 that sounds like a Tuba rather than Violins slowly pulsing.

Who gives a shit you ask? Who knows… But I for one think that the original vinyl release of this track was ten times cleaner and skillful than the edited version.

Don’t believe me? I took the liberty of transferring my vinyl of the song and converting it to mp3 for this post, as the original song is literally impossible to get on CD or MP3.
My theory is that they would of had to pay royalties to the artist in which Chemist sampled, and being that they were a new group, this was out of the question. I had heard they only released 1,000 copies of the original EP which the original is from, who knows if this is true, though it would make sense that when it reached the rerelease and CD release stage it was completely changed.

Here is the original version, compare and enjoy:

Lesson 6: The Lecture (Original 1998)

Any question?
